Hierarchy issues and Communication

Inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour is cited as a problem area across many professions and health and social care is no exception.

Evidence is of course crucial. The excellent work of Christine Porath demonstrates the devastating damage done to performance and motivation.

The Atrainability training will work through the root causes and help delegates to consider their own contribution either directly considering more effective behaviour or by not helping ‘difficult’ colleagues adapt their behaviour. For managers perhaps the realisation that they need to deal with the inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour is the key message.

    • learning from successful interventions as well from events that haven’t gone quite so well, or indeed as planned
Human Factors Awareness 1 day workshop

A full introductory grounding in Human Factors non-technical skills and behaviours with an understanding of how and why errors happen and simple skills to help avoid, trap and mitigate them

    This module builds on the ½ day session and provides :
    • a greater awareness of Human Factors and how being human influences safety, patient experience, team effectiveness and improvement
    • One day is often requested by attendees of the half day module. A whole day offers time for more interaction since the half day is necessarily focused on content delivery so tends to be more of a lecture in style
    • Dealing with difficult people is a module that benefits from longer time as well as communication and decision making
Human Factors Awareness 2 day workshop

A more in-depth 2 day module covering the topics in the one day module above plus more time to delve into the subject and its applicability in different specialist areas of practice

    This module includes :
    • Two days allows the full content at Foundation level to be delivered with time to address the specific issues that a multi-disciplinary team of delegates invariably brings
    • Typical attendees vary from support workers to consultants and managers. Clearly they all have slightly different problems and these are often of necessity glossed over in an abbreviated course
    • Personality preference and the effects of high workload and stress are discussed in depth. This offers enhanced self-awareness and consequent support to grow and develop Emotional Intelligence. For those well-versed in such topics this brings it together with a cross-reference to the rest of the Human Factors non-technical skills
    • For in-depth understanding two days allows adequate time for group discussions and anecdotal evidence suggests this leads to long-term improvements

    Blending Human Factors and Quality Improvement makes obvious sense where either the subjects are not well developed in-house or an in-house Quality Improvement team may not be fully conversant with Human Factors principles and vice versa.
